About the Initiative

HomeGrown Plus is happy to be collaborating with the British Council to offer two places as Fellows for the Venice Fellowship 2025. The Venice Fellowships Programme is a unique opportunity for creative individuals, students, researchers, artists, and professionals at the start of their careers, to spend a month in Venice during the world’s most important art and architecture biennales.

Successful candidates will spend one residency month in Venice to develop a proposed project and gain invigilation experience acting as an exhibition ambassador for commissioned exhibition at the British Pavilion. As Fellows, they will engage with an international community of architects, artists, researchers, entrepreneurs, young leaders and change makers, and contribute with a proposed project.

About the Guidance Notes

It is important that you read the Venice Fellowship Guidance notes BEFORE you fill out your application >. The guidance notes are provided by the British Council and outline your responsibilities before, during and following your time in Venice should you be selected. The British Council asks that you complete the Equity and Diversity Monitoring Form

which is voluntary.

About the Selection Process

Selection of the final two fellows will be made by the British Council based on the shortlist of up to 8 candidates identified by HomeGrown Plus. The British Council’s selection criteria are listed in the guidance document.

In order to be selected you will need a valid passport which will not expire before December 2025. You will need to obtain your own travel visa (depending on the country which issued your passport).

About the Bursary

The selected fellows will receive a bursary of £3,300 to cover costs associated with; Outbound and Return Travel, accommodation in Vencie, per diems, insurance (medical and travel), Visa cost, local transport, emergency costs (towards pharmacy costs if needed).

    Each Fellow will receive a Travel Grant of £3,300 (three thousand and three hundred British pounds). See the Guidance Notes for more details.

    We encourage applications from D/deaf, disabled and/or neurodivergent individuals. It is the responsibility of Fellows to anticipate any access support they may need for their Venice Fellowship. Fellows should take into account any access needs relating to travelling to Venice, invigilating at the British Pavilion, conducting a project and living in the city for a full month. Please see the Guidance Notes for details regarding access support and the process for allocating access funds.

    This does not affect your application. We ask this of all candidates to assess how best we can support our Fellows for their participation in the Programme.

    2. Motivation and Vision

    This section will help us understand why you are applying for the 2025 Venice Fellowship Programme so we can get to know you more, know what has inspired you, what you are proposing as a project/research idea, why it’s important to you, and how it connects to the programme values, ways of working and themes.

    We encourage applicants to refer to the Selection Criteria in the Fellows Guidelines as a reference point. Applicants are welcome to expand beyond this criteria as well.

    3. Exhibition ambassador/Invigilator

    A key component of the Venice Fellowship Programme is being an Exhibition Ambassador / Invigilator, which requires invigilating the British Pavilion exhibition spaces, engaging with visitors and being the public face of the British Council and its commission.

    5. Video/Audio Application Format
    We welcome applications in both paper (written) or audio/video format. Feel free to use the method that is most comfortable for you. If you are answering in video (audio and image) or just audio format, please use the below guidelines:
    • A recorded application should not be overly produced. This is not an opportunity to demonstrate your skills in production, but to clearly communicate your skills/experience, project idea and interest in this opportunity in an accessible format.
    • Please ensure your recording is no more than 8-10 minutes long, which is the equivalent to the word limit for written applications.
     
    • You may link to a third-party platform such as Google Drive, Soundcloud, Vimeo or Dropbox. Please provide together with the link the password details, in case the link is password protected. 
    Your recorded application should answer all the questions set out below in the written form. Please ensure you respond to these prompts clearly, and structure the content in relation to them, using the following timing guide: 150 words: 30 seconds - 1 minute, 250 words: 1-2 minutes
